In general, nonmetals are nonconductors of heat and electricity, are nonmalleable solids, and many are gases at room temperature. Most metals are good conductors of heat and electricity, are malleable and ductile, and are moderate to high melting points. The 14 elements following lanthanum (z=57) are called lanthanides, and the 14 following actinium (z=89) are called actinides.Įlements in the periodic table can be placed into two broad categories, metals and nonmetals. The two rows of elements starting at z=58, are sometimes called inner transition metals and have that have been extracted and placed at the bottom of the table, because they would make the table too wide if kept continuous. The elements shaded in light pink in the table above are known as transition metals. These groups contain the most naturally abundant elements, and are the most important for life. The main group elements are groups 1,2 and 13 through 18. The groups are numbered at the top of each column and the periods on the left next to each row. From left to right, the atomic number (z) of the elements increases from one period to the next (horizontal). On the periodic table, elements that have similar properties are in the same groups (vertical). Although most modern periodic tables are arranged in eighteen groups (columns) of elements, Mendeleev's original periodic table had the elements organized into eight groups and twelve periods (rows). Mendeleev believed that when the elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic mass, certain sets of properties recur periodically. Dmitri Mendeleev, a Russian scientist, was the first to create a widely accepted arrangement of the elements in 1869. The Periodic Table of Elements categorizes like elements together. In their paper, the authors also write that Black Panther provides a good opportunity to discuss diversity in STEM, with King T’Challa’s sister Shuri, who leads Wakanda’s tech lab, offering “a shining example for the next generation of STEM leaders.\) “I couldn't believe how engaged they were.” In fact, she says, another set of students, who hadn’t sat the exam, heard about it and asked to be involved. But the students were “huge Marvel fans” and had been discussing the movie before class for weeks. “Usually when I teach the unit on the periodic table… students don't seem to be very excited,” says Appleby, a senior lecturer in chemistry at LTU. “I’d have been thrilled with a question like that as a student.” “It lets us talk about parts of the table not normally covered in undergraduate courses,” she says. Meanwhile, one student picked up on the strength and hardness of vibranium, suggesting a close proximity to the same group as chromium, the hardest metal we know. The same expert suggested that vibranium’s amazing capacity to absorb sound and other vibrations (say, a hit from Thor’s hammer) would require “elaborate structures”, which are a common feature in the boron group in the periodic table. The expert the authors spoke to agreed, claiming that vibranium would almost certainly be “in radioactive land”. The same student also pointed to Wakanda’s use of vibranium as an energy source to support their claim. One student observed that in the film, vibranium “glows a blueish purple”, which resembles other radioactive elements like uranium. it changes genetic material), which could be indicative of radioactivity. Black Panther also shows vibranium’s strong mutagenic properties (i.e. Heavier elements, students noted, tend to be radioactive, making it possible that vibranium is as well. All agreed that vibranium would likely be located in the middle section of the periodic table, where the majority of metals are located. Vibranium’s likely location near the bottom of the table would also, in the words of one student, make it a “very heavy” element. As of January 2016, the seventh row of the periodic table was completed with the addition of four new elements, so a new element could begin an entirely new row. A common answer among the students was to place vibranium near the bottom of the periodic table.
